cumulative voting
In a typical board member election, each association member may cast one vote for each available board position (e.g., if three board positions are open, a member may vote for three candidates).
Cumulative voting is where association member may cast as many votes as there are available board positions, and the member may distribute those votes among the candidates however the member sees fit. For example, if three board positions are open, a voter may choose to divide their three votes in any combination; the voter may give two votes to one candidate and one vote to another, or all three to a single candidate.
In order to use cumulative voting in an association, the bylaws must say that cumulative voting may be used. Then, in order to use cumulative voting at a particular meeting, the meeting notice must state that cumulative voting may be used, or a member must give notice during the meeting and before the vote is taken of the member's intent to cumulate votes. Then, all members may cumulated their votes without giving further notice. If the vote is held without a meeting or in conjunction with a meeting pursuant to 16-6a-709 "Action by Written Ballot," a member that wishes to cumulate their votes should give notice to the board before ballots are sent out to the members.
